Sample Size in Football Betting: Why 10 Bets Tell You Almost Nothing
Sample Size in Football Betting: Why 10 Bets Tell You Almost Nothing
What sample size means
Sample size refers to the number of observations used to evaluate a result. In football betting, each published insight is one observation. If you look at five insights, your sample size is five. If you look at three hundred, it is three hundred. The concept seems simple, but its implications are frequently misunderstood. The size of the sample determines how much confidence you can place in the results. Small samples are noisy and unreliable. Large samples reveal the underlying pattern.
Why small samples are dangerous
Five or ten bets can look extraordinary or catastrophic purely due to luck. If a model wins seven out of ten selections, it might seem impressive — but with a sample that small, the result is statistically meaningless. The same model could easily lose seven of the next ten. Small samples are dominated by variance, and any conclusion drawn from them is fragile. Judging a strategy, a platform, or a method after only a handful of results is one of the most common errors in football betting evaluation.
A profitable model can look bad over 10 bets
Consider a model with a genuine long-term positive expected value. Over 500 selections, it produces a steady ROI. But within that 500-bet sample, there will be stretches of ten or fifteen consecutive losses. If you were to evaluate the model only during one of those stretches, you would conclude it is failing — even though the overall trajectory is clearly positive. This is why short-term results can be deeply misleading. A profitable model does not produce a profit on every subset of bets. It produces a profit over the full sample.
Hit rate needs context
Hit rate — the percentage of winning selections — is one of the most quoted metrics in football betting. But hit rate alone tells you almost nothing. A 70% hit rate sounds impressive, but if the average odds are 1.20, the model is barely breaking even. A 50% hit rate sounds mediocre, but if the average odds are 2.20, the model is highly profitable. Hit rate must always be considered alongside average odds. Without that context, the number is decorative, not analytical.
ROI needs enough data
Return on investment (ROI) is a more informative metric than hit rate, but it too requires a sufficient sample to be meaningful. Over ten bets, ROI can swing dramatically based on a single result. Over two hundred bets, ROI begins to stabilise and reflect the model's actual performance. The smaller the sample, the wider the confidence interval — meaning the true performance could be significantly better or worse than what the short-term ROI suggests. Only with enough data does ROI become a reliable indicator.
Why 100+ tracked insights are more meaningful
A sample of 100 or more insights starts to reduce the influence of individual outcomes. At that scale, a few lucky wins or unlucky losses no longer dominate the aggregate result. The law of large numbers begins to apply, and the observed performance converges towards the model's true expected value. This does not mean 100 is a magic number — more is always better — but it is the point where evaluation starts to become grounded in evidence rather than noise.
How FCResults uses historical records
FCResults maintains a full historical record of every insight published, including the result, the odds, the units, and the date. This record allows users to evaluate performance over meaningful samples rather than reacting to recent results. The historical performance section displays wins, losses, voids, and ROI across different time periods, giving users the context needed to judge the system properly. Transparency over a large sample is the foundation of credible evaluation.
Final thoughts: patience is part of the edge
Patience and discipline are not separate from the analytical process — they are part of it. The ability to resist judging a system after a small number of results, to wait for a meaningful sample before drawing conclusions, and to maintain consistent staking throughout is what allows long-term evaluation to work. Without patience, even the best model will be abandoned prematurely. With it, the data is allowed to speak.
With FCResults, every insight is recorded to build a transparent long-term sample. Review our historical records to see how performance develops over hundreds of tracked insights, not just the last few.
